Wolverine # 1 (Volume 6, April 2014) is the start of a short-lived ongoing series that begins with Logan living a new life: he has abandoned his superhero friends and joined a criminal organization. The issue focuses on his infiltration of the criminal underworld as a mole for Nick Fury's S.H.I.E.L.D. while also revealing a new, mysterious health issue he is experiencing.
"Payback"
The series, launched during the "All-New Marvel Now!" initiative, takes Wolverine in a darker, edgier direction.
- The Infiltration: Wolverine has seemingly turned his back on the X-Men and the Avengers to join an organization called the "Badd Medicine" crime ring, a group focused on selling and distributing weapons and drugs.
- The Mole: It is quickly revealed that Logan is working undercover for Nick Fury of S.H.I.E.L.D., attempting to dismantle the organization from the inside.
- A New Status Quo and Health Issue: The issue introduces a significant change for the character: his healing factor is fading or slowing down, a condition he does not understand. During a mission, he is shot and the bullet remains in his body, forcing him to manually dig it out, an act that emphasizes his newfound vulnerability.
- The Deception: Logan is pretending to be a ruthless criminal who has "gone off the rails," but his inner monologue and conversations with Nick Fury confirm his true intentions. He is assigned a handler within the crime ring, a new character named Pinch, a young woman with a sharp mind.
