Wolverine # 50 (January 1992) is a double-sized issue that concludes the "Shiva Scenario" storyline. In it, Wolverine tracks down the location where his memory implants were created and is forced to battle the deadly Shiva robots, a mechanical system designed to eliminate rogue Weapon X agents.

"Dreams of Gore!"

The issue wraps up the mystery surrounding Logan's fragmented memories from the "Weapon X" program.

  • Discovering the Source: Wolverine travels to the secret facility where his false memories were created. The location is filled with realistic sets designed to simulate different environments for memory implantation.
  • The Shiva Protocol: Once Logan enters the facility, the "Shiva Program" is activated. This is an automated defense system designed to hunt and kill any Weapon X operative who has gone rogue. The system uses robots that adapt to any combat style; once one robot is destroyed, a new one is activated that cannot be defeated the same way.
  • A Battle of Attrition: Wolverine engages in a brutal fight against the Shiva robots. During the battle, a mind probe from a robot forces him to relive painful memories and moments of agony, including a resurfaced memory of his prom date, Silver Fox.
  • The X-Men Intervene: Back aboard the Blackbird, the X-Men realize that the "Weapon X" inductee list is actually a kill list. They arrive just in time to see Wolverine destroy the final Shiva robot.
  • Silver Fox's Betrayal: In a parallel plot, Silver Fox (working for Hydra) is at the facility and uses the distraction of Wolverine's fight to kill the Professor, the creator of the Shiva Protocol. In his last moments, the Professor activates all remaining Shiva robots to target Sabretooth next, setting up future conflicts.

The landmark 50th issue, known for its unique die-cut cover that resembles a top-secret file slashed by Wolverine's claws, was created by:

  • Writer: Larry Hama
  • Penciler: Marc Silvestri
  • Inkers: Dan Green, Tom Palmer, and Hilary Barta
