Wolverine and the X-Men: Alpha & Omega # 1, published in March 2013, is the first issue of a six-issue miniseries where Wolverine is mentally trapped in a virtual reality by an old, unknown enemy. The story, written and drawn by Brian Wood and Howard Porter, delves into Wolverine's fragmented past and forces the X-Men to rescue him.

  • The Trap: Wolverine is mentally trapped in a simulated reality where he constantly cycles through different, fragmented scenarios from his long and violent past—World War I, the Weapon X program, his time with Alpha Flight, and his experiences as a samurai in Japan. He has no memory of the present.
  • A Familiar Foe: The villain behind this is an old enemy from Wolverine's history whose name is not initially revealed but is obsessed with torturing Logan with his memories. This enemy has managed to physically connect Wolverine's mind to a massive, hidden server.
  • The X-Men Get Involved: The X-Men (including Cyclops, Iceman, and Kitty Pryde) become aware of Wolverine's disappearance and begin investigating. They track him to a remote, hidden facility.
  • Entering the Digital World: Once they locate the facility, the X-Men realize they can't just fight their way in without risking permanent damage to Logan's mind. Kitty Pryde, using her phasing powers, acts as a bridge to send the other X-Men's consciousnesses into the digital world to find and wake up Wolverine.
  • Cliffhanger: The issue ends with the X-Men entering the confusing and dangerous digital landscape of Wolverine's mind, a world defined by his most traumatic memories.
