Wolverine/Captain America # 1, published in April 2004, is the first issue of a four-part limited series focusing on the two heroes tracking a stolen piece of alien technology. The story, written by R.A. Jones with art by Tom Derenick, explores their professional conflict and forced cooperation as they deal with a rogue black-ops organization.

  • A Dangerous Chip: A powerful, mutating Shi'ar computer chip, capable of causing widespread devastation, is stolen while being transported between the X-Mansion and Avengers Mansion.
  • The Pursuit Begins: Professor Charles Xavier alerts S.H.I.E.L.D. to the theft. Captain America and Warbird (Carol Danvers) are tasked with retrieving the chip. Simultaneously, Wolverine is already on the case, tracking the thieves' trail through the sewers of New York.
  • The Villains: The culprits are a rogue, high-tech black-ops group known as "The Contingency," led by a former S.H.I.E.L.D. agent named Rapture. Rapture uses a neural-net exoskeleton that makes her difficult to track telepathically.
  • Confrontation and Injury: Wolverine finds Rapture first and engages her in a sewer battle. Rapture's technology proves effective, and she manages to seriously injure Wolverine before escaping.
  • Cliffhanger: Captain America and Warbird discover a critically wounded Wolverine lying in the sewage water. The issue ends with Logan in bad shape, setting the stage for the rest of the miniseries as the heroes must work together to stop "The Contingency".
