Wolverine: Inner Fury # 1, a square-bound one-shot comic published in November 1992, centers on Wolverine becoming infected by high-tech nanites that trick his healing factor into trying to destroy his Adamantium skeleton. The story is known for its experimental and abstract artwork by Bill Sienkiewicz.

  • The Nanite Infection: The plot revolves around a rogue Hydra scientist known as the Whale (who prefers to be called the Shark), who develops nanotechnology designed to break down Wolverine's Adamantium skeleton.
  • A Deceptive Mission: S.H.I.E.L.D. alerts Wolverine to a Hydra courier carrying a communique with his name, which is actually a setup. Wolverine investigates despite Nick Fury's warning and is infected with the nanites during an ambush.
  • The Healing Factor's Agony: The nanites work by making Logan's healing factor perceive the metal in his body as a foreign virus or infection, pushing his power to the point of agony as it attempts to reject the unbreakable alloy.
  • The Villain Revealed: With his senses impaired by the infection, Wolverine tracks the Whale, only to discover that the mission's supposed ally, Mr. Big, is actually the co-leader of the Hydra project and the true villain.
  • A Desperate Move: His healing factor overwhelmed and in extreme pain, Wolverine resorts to a drastic measure to survive: he stabs himself in the head with his claws. This action forces his healing factor to redirect its focus to healing the immediate, critical brain injury, allowing the nanites to die off in his bloodstream.
  • Resolution: When he regains consciousness, Wolverine quickly dispatches Mr. Big and promises the captured Whale that he will connect him with someone like Reed Richards to explore his science without Hydra's influence.
