X-Force # 3 1991 NM-

X-Force # 3, published by Marvel Comics in August 1991 (with an October 1991 cover date), is titled "The Open Hand, The Closed Fist" and features a major, violent confrontation with the mysterious villain Gideon and his enforcer, Lethal Legion.

• The Mission: X-Force tracks Gideon, an enigmatic "External" (an immortal mutant), to an office building.
• The Fight: A chaotic fight breaks out. The team members (Cannonball, Boom-Boom, Domino, Shatterstar, Warpath, and Sunspot) use their powers in a coordinated assault.
• A Brutal Blow: The fight takes a dark turn when the villain Gideon brutally attacks Sunspot (Roberto Da Costa), leaving him critically injured. This shocking event establishes the high stakes and ruthless nature of this new series compared to the more traditional X-Men books.
• The Escape: Gideon and his forces escape, leaving X-Force to deal with the severe injuries to their teammate. The issue ends on a cliffhanger, with Sunspot's life hanging in the balance.
