X-Force # 7, published by Marvel Comics in December 1991 (with a February 1992 cover date), is titled "Means and Ends" and focuses on the newly formed team settling into their new base of operations and a minor confrontation with an intelligence agency.

"Means and Ends"

The story follows the X-Force team as they relocate to the old New Mutants mansion in upstate New York, which has been converted into a high-tech headquarters.

  • The Status Quo: The team members are exploring their new home and adapting to Cable's rigorous training regimen. The issue focuses heavily on the character dynamics, particularly the romantic tensions between Cannonball and Boom-Boom, and the growing professional respect between Cable and Domino.
  • The Threat: The team detects government monitoring devices planted in the mansion. Cable, ever paranoid, immediately assumes a threat.
  • The Action: The team encounters agents from a intelligence agency who are attempting to spy on the new, unofficial mutant group. A brief, non-lethal skirmish ensues.
  • The Resolution: X-Force easily neutralizes the agents and destroys the surveillance equipment, reasserting their independence and secretive nature. The incident serves to remind the team that they are outside the law and constantly under scrutiny by government organizations like S.H.I.E.L.D. or Department K.
