X-Men: The Exterminated # 1 (2019) is a one-shot comic that deals with the emotional fallout of Cable's death during the Extermination event and celebrates the character's life through two distinct stories.
"A Death in the Family"
Written by Zac Thompson and Lonnie Nadler, the main story focuses on how different X-Men, particularly Cable's adopted daughter Hope Summers and Jean Grey, cope with the loss.
- Grief and Anger: The story follows Hope as she struggles to process her father's death. Her grief manifests as anger, and she embarks on a mission to shut down Cable's various hidden bases and clear out his technology and weapons.
- A Mentorship Moment: Jean Grey, who has a complex history with the Summers family, attempts to mentor Hope and prevent her from going down a dark, self-destructive path. The narrative explores themes of family, loss, and how the X-Men deal with death on a personal level.
- Cameos: The issue also features appearances by Bishop and Deadpool, both of whom have significant histories and relationships with Cable.
"Life Lessons"
The second, shorter story is written by the legendary Chris Claremont and is a flashback to Cable's infancy.
- A Father's Worry: This tale shows a young Cyclops (Scott Summers) and Madelyne Pryor (Hope's adoptive grandmother in a way) in Alaska shortly after baby Nathan Summers' birth. It highlights Scott's anxieties about being a father and the dangers his son will face.
- Family Bonds: The story includes interaction between Scott, his father Corsair, Havok, and Polaris, emphasizing the unique and complicated bonds of the Summers family and offering a sense of hope and continuity to contrast the main story's themes of mourning.
The issue serves as a proper farewell to the older version of Cable before the new, younger version took prominence in subsequent X-Men titles during the "Dawn of X" era.
