A "fake" life in Arkham: Bruce's journey begins in Arkham Asylum, where he's been led to believe that the Batman identity is a delusion. He is a patient under the care of a Dr. Red Hood and an Alfred Pennyworth who tells him his parents were never murdered. This reality is an elaborate ruse designed to suppress the original Batman.
The escape: Bruce manages to see through the illusion and escape the asylum. Once outside, he finds a devastated, dust-covered world where civilization has collapsed. This new reality is a direct result of a war between the forces of Justice and Doom.
The Joker's head: The first companion Bruce encounters in the wasteland is the disembodied, but still living, head of the Joker, which he carries in a jar. The Joker's head acts as a ghoulish, sarcastic guide, offering commentary on the world's bleak state as they travel.
Discovering the past: Bruce meets other survivors, including a jaded Wonder Woman, who explains how humanity turned against its heroes. She reveals that a villain named Omega—who wields Darkseid's power and is later revealed to be the original Batman himself—ultimately took control.
The true nature of this Batman: It is also revealed that the Bruce Wayne of this story is not the original Dark Knight, but a clone created by a machine built by the real Bruce to ensure his legacy would continue. This new, younger Bruce has the original's memories but also a more hopeful disposition.
