Blue Beetle # 1 1977 from Modern Comics is a reprint of the original Charlton Comics' Blue Beetle # 1 (1967), written and drawn by Steve Ditko. It features two classic stories: a Blue Beetle adventure and the first appearance and origin of The Question.
Main Story: "Bugs the Squids"
- Plot: The story follows the new, gadget-wielding Ted Kord as the Blue Beetle (this is the Silver Age version of the character, a brilliant inventor with no superpowers). He uses his technologically advanced flying vehicle, called "The Bug," and various devices to thwart a criminal organization known as the Squid Gang as they attempt a heist at a high-society party.
Backup Story: "Who is the Question?"
- Significance: This is a key story because it marks the first appearance of Vic Sage, the hard-hitting investigative journalist who becomes the faceless vigilante known as The Question.
- Plot: Vic Sage investigates a local racketeering ring run by Lou Dicer. Using a special synthetic mask and gas created by his friend Professor Tot Rodor, Sage disguises himself with a featureless face to gather information the local police cannot get. He eventually exposes Dicer's secret partner, proving that corruption runs deep within Hub City.
