Solo Avengers Starring Hawkeye and Mockingbird # 1 December 1987 is the first issue of an anthology series dedicated to solo stories of Avengers members. It is most significant for introducing the villain Trick Shot, the man who truly taught Clint Barton archery.

The issue is split into two connected stories:

  • Main Story: "Here Comes Hawkeye"
Hawkeye is at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum rehearsing a charity archery show. The villainous Trick Shot replaces the circus performers with assassins to humiliate his former protégé. During the performance, Hawkeye is ambushed and his bow is broken, forcing him to improvise a defense against the armed "clowns".
  • Second Story: "Listen to the Mockingbird"
Mockingbird arrives late for the performance and discovers the real performers unconscious in their dressing room. She is attacked by Trick Shot’s henchmen but successfully defeats them. She eventually reunites with Hawkeye and shows him a curved arrow, which he immediately recognizes as the calling card of Trick Shot.
  • Trick Shot Debut: This issue marks the first appearance of Trick Shot, providing a major retcon to Hawkeye's origin story by revealing he had an archery mentor besides the Swordsman.
  • Creative Teams: The first story was written by Tom DeFalco with art by Mark Bright. The second story features early professional work by artist Jim Lee.
  • Series Evolution: The Solo Avengers title eventually changed its name to Avengers Spotlight with issue #21.
