The Fantastic Four, Marvel Comics' "first family" of superheroes, debuted in 1961 and pioneered a new era of relatable, flawed heroes with personal struggles. Origin Story

The team's history begins with four friends who undergo an unauthorized space flight in an experimental rocket designed by Dr. Reed Richards. Their goal was to beat other nations (originally the Soviet Union) to space or to prove the project's viability to financiers. During the flight, the ship was bombarded by an unexpected, intense storm of cosmic rays that the shielding could not contain. 

The ship crashed back to Earth, and the four discovered the radiation had mutated their bodies, granting them incredible powers. 

The Team Members and Their Powers

The original four members and their abilities are: 

• Mister Fantastic (Reed Richards): A scientific genius and the team leader, he can stretch his body into incredible lengths and shapes.
• Invisible Woman (Susan "Sue" Storm): Reed's girlfriend and later wife, she gained the ability to turn invisible and project powerful, invisible force fields and energy blasts.
• The Human Torch (Johnny Storm): Sue's younger brother, he can engulf his body in flames without harm, control fire, and fly.
• The Thing (Ben Grimm): Reed's college roommate and a skilled pilot, he was transformed into a monstrous, rock-like figure with immense superhuman strength and durability, a change he initially resented.
