A CGC grade of 9.8 (Near Mint/Mint) indicates a collectible that is considered nearly perfect, with only negligible handling or manufacturing defects. It is generally the highest practical grade a collector can expect to obtain for most items.
Key Characteristics of a CGC 9.8
- Condition: The item is essentially pristine, with minimal to no visible flaws upon first inspection.
- Defects: Minor imperfections, such as very small, non-color-breaking spine stress lines, subtle bindery tears (typically 1/16" or less), or a slight manufacturing miswrap, may be present but must be negligible and hard to spot under normal viewing conditions.
- Appearance: The cover should be flat with no surface wear, inks should be bright with high reflectivity, and corners should be sharp and square.
- Paper Quality: The paper quality must be at least "off-white with light aging" or "white" to achieve this high grade.
Context in Collecting
- "Obtainable Perfect": While grades of 9.9 (Mint) and 10.0 (Gem Mint) exist, they are extremely rare. The 9.8 is widely regarded by collectors as the benchmark for a "perfect" or top-tier collectible.
- Value Jump: There is often a significant price gap between a 9.6 and a 9.8, as many collectors are willing to pay a premium for the certainty of having one of the best examples available, effectively taking the item off their "want list" for good.
- Modern vs. Vintage: Modern collectibles (especially comics from the last few decades) are expected to grade very high, with 9.8 being a common goal. A 9.8 on a much older, vintage item (e.g., from the Silver Age) is exceptionally rare and commands a very high value due to the difficulty of preserving an item in that condition over decades.
